Unless I'm completely blind, there is no button that can be added to open a new tab, like Firefox has. This is, IMHO, Safari's only shortcoming. I wonder how I would go about contacting the right people in Apple to make a suggestion like this?

You can double click the tab bar to create new tabs. You can also force safari to open up links in new tabs instead of windows.

I just sent feedback to them regarding this annoyance here. I wonder if they actually read those feedback messages...

I have it automatically open up in tabs, but thanks for the double-click tip. I didn't know that! :D

Haven't you heard? If you are sending feedback and want them to take it seriously, tell them you are John Mayer!

You could probably make a bookmarklet that does this as well...

hey stretch, my customize toolbar doesn't have any of those things in the 3rd row. What version of Safari are you using or did you have to enable it with something?

What gives? I have nothing in that 3rd row! I'm using the latest release, 3.1.1.

Yes you can and I do it all the time, but it appears there are people who want a button to click. I like both. It's nice to have options. That way everyone is happy! :D

thats what I always do. I find it much easier than going to a button.

The double-click on the tab bar thing only works if you have tabs open already....otherwise there is no tab bar

There is always a Tab Bar if you go to View and select Show Tab Bar. Then it's always there. Like I said I use Command-T also but others want other options.
