I have a 2.16ghz MBP, Intel Core Duo, 2 gigs ram, x1600 256mb. I rarely use it on my lap and mainly have it is a desktop. Even as a student, I can't remember one time I have taken it to class or absolutely needed a laptop.
That said I am looking to get into a desktop.

I can't afford a new Mac Pro.

I will be using CS3 fairly regularly in the near future, mostly Indesign.

I got a trade offer for a Powermac g5, here are the specs
Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 processors
4.5 GB of RAM (6 of 8 DIMM slots filled)
ATI Radeon 9650 video card - 256 MB of VRAM, dual DVI output (Apple BTO
option)
250 GB Western Digital Hard Drive
SuperDrive
Airport Extreme wireless card (w/ OE external antenna)
Internal 56K modem
Apple keyboard & mouse
DVI to VGA adapter
OE OS X (10.3) restore DVD

any thoughts? I have leopard and all my own software to dump on it.

That old G5 will be slower at just about everything than your notebook. About the only thing it has going for it is that it has more memory (and can hold more still) and probably a faster hard disk. Besides being slower, it'll also be noisier.

I'd suggest you close your laptop, hide it behind your desk, and hook up your monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Pretty soon you'll start thinking you have a desktop.

its not a core 2 duo, it is one of the first or second run of MBP's, a dual g5 would really be slower?

I guess I could just ramp the ram up to 4 gigs or something.

On a separate note, I have a 400mhz g4 with about 400gb of storage in drives on it, if I upgraded the ram (it is at 256 right now), could I run leapard on that?

No you are wish listing. Sell/trade in what you do not use and get what you want and enjoy the experience. CS3 will perform wonderfully with the newest chipset. Let the past go...
