Sony HDR SR12 video file format compatibility

Just bought a Sony HDR SR12 and shot a whole vacation long of videos in Standard Quality mode (not HD).

I use 2008 model iMac and iMovie. Problem is that iMovie does not recognize Sony's recorded video file format (again standard quality, not HD) which has the extension ".mpeg".

Now, I've read in various threads that iMovie supports AVCHD. Does this mean that i'm facing this compatibility issue because I did not shoot in HD format? And how can I import and edit my Standard Quality videos in my Mac?

Comments appreciated

To answerone of your questions.... yes, if you had shot in HD you wouldn't have this problem. iMovie can handle the AVDHD that the SR12 puts out in HD mode

In SD mode the SR12 uses MPEG2 - same standard as DVD.

iMovie doesn't support MPEG2 import as you've discovered.

The most obvious thing I can think of, others may have better ideas, is to use ffmpegX to convert it to DV (or other lossless video type) then import into iMovie
