Why won't movies of the file type .mpg or .avi work in iDVD or iMovie? It seems weird that apple doesn't support these file types as they are the most common, not .mov. Thanks

It does, you just need to download the correct codec. The one for AVI is called DivX I believe. MPEG should work...

where can I find that divx thing. I mean I can play and view those files using VNC, but when I try to put them in iDVD, it says the file type is unsupported. Thanks

I've never used iDVD to play movie files, only DVD discs. Anyway, if you download and install Divx (www.divx.com), Quicktime will play your AVI movies just fine. Any other files that won't play, will undoubtedly work under a program called VLC (not sure if this is what you meant, when you said "VNC").
