cannot update

My software updater won't let me update. Can anyone help me? The attached image shows the error message I keep getting. Thanks.

Try using disk utility to repair permissions and then reboot and see if it helps.

Just tried it and got the same error. I even tried manually changing the permissions on the system folder. In the year I've had this machine I've never seen this. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
