My friend wants to get a bigger hard drive for his PowerBook G4 (1.5GHz, 12-inch). What's the largest hard drive this computer supports? He was hoping for 500 or 750 GB.

Your Mac's Specs
15" MBP '06 2.33 C2D 4GB 10.7; 13" MBA '14 1.8 i7 8GB 10.11; 21" iMac '13 2.9 i5 8GB 10.11; 6S
Largest for an internal notebook drive is currently 250 GB for a 2.5" ATA drive. This is what he will need.

Largest for a 2.5" SATA is currently 320 GB. Will not work in the PowerBook.

Suppose to be a 500GB notebook drive on the horizon, but doubt it will be available in ATA form.

This is the current one available and OWC even has newegg beat by $5 on the drive.

I didn't mean the largest available. I'm wondering what the largest drive is that would be compatible. His computer won't find the whole drive if it's beyond a certain size. MCE tells me 160GB might be the largest option for a PowerBook G4 (http://www.mcetech.com/ms.html) but maybe that's just the biggest one that they have. He currently has a 120GB, so he might not care to upgrade if his best option is only 40 GB more.

Same answer.

Check out OWC, you can search for upgrades based on system.

I believe the limit for some of the older systems like the G3 was 128GB, which makes the 120GB drives the largest you could use.

The 128 gig limit is a reality on older systems (PATA 66 bus) but your G4 has a 100 MB bus and can use larger drives as bobtomay points out.

Oh cool! I guess 250 GB is an option after all. I just hope installing a hard drive in a PowerBook G4 isn't as painful as an iBook G3! I assume OWC guarantees compatibility?
