My Imac was in sleep mode when it started. It sounded like an alarm clock. i pressed the power button to shut it down. Tried to restart it and nothing happens, just a slight sound like something is spinning slowly.

G'day and welcome to the Forums Petaero.

Not a great beginning alas.

Have a look at the link and see if it is familiar:-

Take note what it says about running the diagnostic hardware and good luck. Let's know how you go please?

Thanks for replying. It was something like that but with continuous beeping.
I just brought it to the apple store for repair. I've only had it since november, so it is still under warranty. They are ordering a power supply and logic board for starters. They said it would probably take about 5 days. I will repost when I get it back and let u know what the cause was.

What a bummer but hang in there and trust you don't go though too much of a withdrawal. Good luck with the repairs.

Got my iMac back, this is what was replaced:
Logic board
Power supply with pressure wall
Cable, Temp sensor, LCD Display panel.
That took a week. Picked it up, started it up at home, everything was fine. Except, No sound. Had to make another appointment, brought it back the next day. 4 days later, it's back. Audio board was replaced. Running like new again. Thank God it was still under warranty.
