Hiya folks (waves)

I'm hoping someone could help install gimp.

I've downloaded "Gimp" and added It to applications but when I double
click the icon,It tells me X11 needs to be used.

So i downloaded X11User.dmg from the apple site,
after clicking through and agreeing to the user licence,
This happens.

As I'm very new to Apple laptops I'm at a total loss as what to do next.

Am I doing something wrong/dumb ?
Could someone show me what to do ?

X11 is on your install/restore discs. You will need to install it using those.
Once you have done that, you can install and use GIMP.

The only way you will get it is if you have the install discs. Your brother-in-law will have to get them for you.

Are you dedicated to using GIMP, or are you open to other alternative image editors for your Mac? You might want to check out GraphicConverter or ChocoFlop, both of which are GIMP-like.

GraphicConverter is really very powerful, but it is a commercial product - you will have to pay after a trial period expires. ChocoFlop is free and is getting very good these days. Both are native OS X apps, not requiring X11.

X11 Download for Tiger OSX 10.4

If you have the Tiger OSX 10.4, you can download the X11 application here: http://cjmart.in/2006/12/01/install-x11-on-tiger-without-the-tiger-install-dvd/
It's not the current version, but once you download it you can click on Software Updates and it will show that there is a newer version that you can update to.
I also wanted to use the Gimp program, but to use this I needed the X11 and I didn't have discs for the computer. With the X11 download from the above link I can now use Gimp.
