Now a thought occurred to me yesterday. I have never indexed this mac. I went to look... and I can't! I don't remember doing it pre-10.5 either, and I was running 10.4 for more than 18 months.
When did that little button vanish? Why do I not need it any more? Is there something else I should be doing instead?
