Check OpenOffice.org also.
If you can afford it, iWork with Pages, Numbers and Keynote is well worth the money.

Pages, part of iWork, is awesome! The $60 pricetag (through amazon) was well worth it!

Also check out Bean. It's a very simple, but full-featured Word Processor that is also compatible with Word docs. I have iWork '08, NeoOffice and MS Office on my machine, but I often find myself coming back to Bean as I like it's clean/simplistic interface.

I use Pages, on a daily bases for writing my reports. It still has to mature a bit, although I love its simple streamline interface, faster start-time than Word, especially Office 08. When I have to export to .Doc format, no one has ever mentioned any problems reading my reports, and most I'm sure don't even know I am using a Mac with Pages..

I actually went through the trouble of buying word through my college for student prices :D it was a longer proccess because my details and the colleges details had to go through and when it came they came to the music block where I live :p and gave me the good news.

The whole music block teachers have word aswell because I like them :D
