unix executable file?

I need to install this software for a class I'm taking, but the Mac installer is just a unix executable file that I can't open. I've tried renaming it to .pkg and .dmg, and dragging it to Terminal...Google has failed me. :( Any help would be very very appreciated.

What type of file is it? Is it a shell script?
