Most efficient software/hardware to record TV shows for viewing on the iphone?

I have an iphone and would like to watch some TV shows which I would like to record from my satellite and convert for viewing on the iphone.

I have Media Center pc which creates video files in a weird format format dvr-ms which no software can convert.

I am ready to add a usb tuner plus sofware to my HTPC (media center OS) to easily convert the TV shows.
