Have only switched to a mac since about a year ago. Today, while I was working with so many windows opened, when my desktop finally resurfaced... I realized that my Hard Disk icon on the top right side of my screen DISAPPEARED! Gone, kaput, no where to be found! Can someone please help me? I want it back! :) Thanks so much!

Try this, in Finder click on Preferences. The First Tab is General and be sure there is a Check mark by Hard Disks under Show items on Desktop. Hope that is it. If not let us know and also which version of OSX are you running?

Are you using Tinker Tool ?

If so launch it to see in the finder panel that the "Disable desktop items"isn't checked

This only works if you don't see any icons on your desktop

If not I found this on another site which may help if you are a terminal user I'm not

Did you try in finder going to view>arrange by>kind. Maybe you moved the disk off screen accidentally or something.

thank you so much to all of you! i finally solved the problem -- yes, kilted -- by going into the terminal window and typing in some sudo commands which i got from a friend who found it in http://docs.info.apple.com... etc. What it did was to sort of show my computer again where that volume was. Go figure. At least it is back where it should be and I can sleep again. :) Thanks again for all your help! :)
