Whenever I boot up my MacBook with my external hard drive plugged in, it locks up at the blue screen, but as soon as I unplug the drive, it goes straight to the login screen.

I've tried repairing permissions, and that's done nothing, along with reformatting and just about every other no brainer fix.

Right now, the only way around it is to unplug it at boot up.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Okay, it wasn't my Time Machine drive, it was my iPod shuffle.

Problem solved!
