HI all, Hmm..a Noob to the forum.
Issue:
I need to intall XP on my Macbook Pro for a Dual Boot System.
However, there is a :)Grimmace:) limitation of BootCamp Assistant:

Problem:
You can not run it on a "pre Partitioned" (more than 2) hard Drive.
Can Anyone help?

Note: I am unable to reformat the drive to 1 partition due to our university Disk Image and Network Synching set up.
So It REALLY does need to be done without using BootCamp.
Also "Windows Emulation" is not an option for I require.

Thanks in advance:)

The problems you're having are a limitation of the Boot Camp Assistant. You can manually partition you drive and then install windows.
A utility like iPartition can do this (others may be able to advise on a freeware alternative). It can also be done from the Terminal I suspect but it's not something I'm familiar enough with to advise on.

Hi MrPlow.
Yes, I have used Leopard Disk Utility to make a partition for windows (fat 32).
I am having issues actually gettting Widows to install now.
I can start it off, then with the first Reboot I hold down option for a choice. But it disk errors on the XP disk.

Has anyone any advice on the install method? (never had these problems before).O:)

Thanks
Will

Did you do a full format of the XP partition or a quick format?

I used the Leopard disk util to put in a third Fat 32 partition.
Here is what happens - Boot from Win XP CD (alt/option) =ok

at first automatic reboot (after windows copies it's files onto the partition) I use "alt/option" and get the choice of booting from
System (osx)
Windows Partition
Windows CD

If I the CD, then Windows starts it's install process alll over again
If I use the Windows Partition i "disk Error"

So I am wondering: what should I be booting the second/Third time round?
Partion? Disc?:[
Very Confused.

You do need to boot into the windows partition after the initial file copy and reboot but it's vital that you use the windows installer to do a full format of the partition to start with I.e. NOT a "keep existing file system (quick format)".

Is that what you did?

Hi MrPlow.
Thanks - I have it finally sorted:
When I looked at the partition options in the XP install I saw that windows would in fact be a fourth partiion - (don't ask why - they don't show up on the mac osx disc util. I think they are part of the process for the disc image stuff) - very bad for XP.

SO:
I did this: (for anyone with the same issues):

Used iPartion with the mac in target disc mode and set the OSX partiions to: "viewable in windows = OFF"

Set the startup disk in prefs to "Windows" restarted and held "C" down for the windows installer boot CD.

Formatted the Windows partition:D (everything else was unkonwn due to tiPartition)

installed windows.
Installed the Botcamp Drivers (automatic on inserting osx intall disc in xp)
Installed 'refit' boot loader and blessed the machine with the refit bless tool.

Enjoyed my dual boot multi partition machine. :D :D :D

Thanks for your help. Esp' with the formating.
I'm gald it wasn't VISTA!!
