Does anyone know if it's possible to use Time Machine to backup to an external USB HD plugged into something besides an Airport Extreme....maybe a D-link or Belkin?

I have a D-Link router and have used Time Machine without any problem. Should work OK for you too.

That's great to hear. One more question - is there a good "draft-N" router that is either solid or able to be upgraded once the final spec is released?
