How can I tell if my trash was secured when emptied?

My husband deleted everything in our home folder. He thought we didn't need it. He said that he can't remember if he clicked "empty trash" or "secure empty trash". I wanted to know if there was any way I could tell what he did before I spend the money on some recovery software?
