I think the iBook G3 has Firewire and USB 1.1, so be really careful about what you buy - make sure it has Firewire. USB 1.1 is very slow!

This would be a better option

As for a HDD, any Firewire HDD should be fine

It definitely does have firewire, but I am almost 100% certain the iBook G3 does not have USB 2.0. The USB 1 port looks identical to the USB 2.0 port, but it's a lot slower.

The iBook G4 was the 1st laptop to have USB 2.0

Either way, on an older machine, you're far better off getting a Firewire based external HDD and DVD writer, as it will be quicker and less of a burden on your system.
