new Finder windows

For some reason, when I have new finder windows opening in "Documents," they are opening without the sidebar. That is to say, they open looking like the attached .jpeg. When I set it so that new finder windows (I am changing this in Finder preferences) open to "Home" I have no problem, and the sidebar shows up fine. Anybody have any idea what the problem is? Right now I just have it set so that things open to "Home" - but my preference would be "Documents".

correction

sorry, I made a mistake on the last post. When new finder windows are opening to "Documents" they look like the one attached here. The one above is how I would like them to look.
