Stupid Questions

Hi,

I have some stupid questions to ask about OS X. I'm completley new to Apples. I've been a PC user for the past 10 years. I've used most windows/DOS and I've had experience with Linux. I know OS X is based upon Unix, but how much is it actually like it to use? Is there a console? Is there the same relationship between the kernal and the graphics server(X11 on linux)? Are the commands if there is a console similar?

Also Mac software: Any particular utilities I should look out for?

there is still a console built into OS X which uses the exact same commands from Unix (ls,cd,mkdir,emacs etc..)

There's emacs (the command, not the PC) in OS X?! Didn't know that...
I still miss good old joe, because vi just simply sucks...

For non-Linux/Unix people: emacs, joe and vi are 3 very common text editors in the Linux/Unix world.

Even if you miss good old joe. vi is a part of every unix flavor. That is why it is a good ideas to know at least the basics of vi.

Also if you know a little of vi, you know a little of ed and sed. So when it comes to shell scripting those editors help.

I still like pico better

Must say I prefer PICO . Will be right at home then if its just about UNIX underneath.

Yep it pretty much is, there will be some things different, but you'll feel right at home

The terminal (called Darwin) is in finder > applications > utilities > terminal, and can be shortcut (did I just say that?) to the dock directly, handy as the root user for Mac crons
