Hi all,

I just replaced my hard drive on my Macbook and thought I would share the experience with anyone out there considering doing the same...

I started out by doing some research on this forum and found 2 items that were particularly helpful. One was a post by alucard, "Replacing Hard Drive on Macbook experience." You can find that thread at: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39132&highlight

The next helpful piece was from macinstruct.com/node/130

I think there are others on the forum that can help as well, but I found these 2 got me through the experience with no glitches. I think that's about all you need...

A couple of additional thoughts: I went from my original 120GB hard drive on a brand new Macbook because I had more music files in iTunes than the drive could accommodate. So I bought a 320GB WD Scorpion 2.5 inch hard drive from Newegg for $164.99 including S&H and received it the day after I ordered it. Newegg is reasonable and FAST! I also downloaded SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html and used it according to their instructions to back up my files. But I DID NOT use a firewire external hard drive. I used a USB WD 160GB Passport external hard drive instead and didn't have any trouble at all going that way, although I'm sure it was slower... Now that I've used SuperDuper, I find it a more flexible backup app than Time Machine, so I plan to pay the $27.95 tab they ask, and I'll use it full time for back up in conjunction with Time Machine.

As for finding a Torx T8 screwdriver to remove the cover from the Macbook hard drive, I looked several places. If you have the time, order one from http://www.daydeal.com/product.php?productid=3572 for $4 including shipping. If you want one right away, go to your local Sears and you'll find one in their hardware department for $3.99 plus tax (plus your gas, so call them first).

If you follow the 2 cites I gave you above, you won't have any trouble getting a new hard drive in your machine. As an aside, I plan to order an external hard drive enclosure for my old 120GB drive and I'll use it as a spare backup drive for one of my computers.

Good luck if you go this way. Don't be shy about changing if you're thinking about it. It's easy and will give you all the extra room you've been wanting on your Macbook.

Noel
