Have a question about hd with aebs

I am now using window xp and using macdrive 7 to format my aebs external harddisk

what format should it be?
HFS+ or HFSX? hwat are the differences?

and...I had a problem sometimes...when I unplug the power the harddisk will crash...and I need to use macdrive7 to repair it...do you guys have this problem?
