New HDD - Can't Install System

Hi again. Still having problems

We recently got a new HDD. Installed it, formatted it, then tried installing the system. The problem is, it crashed during installation, coming up:

"There was an error installing the software.
Please restart."

So we did. Then we tried it again.

After two seconds it came up again. So we restarted again.

Now it won't start up AT ALL. It flashes a folder with a question mark in it (can't find system folder) then it comes up the Apple logo. Nothing happens after that. The CD doesn't spin, and there is no circular loading status thing you usually see at the startup.

Now I can't do anything at all

We have an iMac G4 - 1Ghz with 17" flat screen.

Any help appreciated.

Its okay, we've got the installaion bit back

The only problem is, it keeps crashing! ARGH! I'm so frustrated.

Its running so slow. I start the installation, and it takes a long time to install different bits of the system. Then it just crashes. One time the computer restarted itself.

Please help!

Which OS are you trying to install?
You replaced the HDD inside? I have the same iMac. (you are brave!)
You could try running the Apple Hardware test cd, just to make sure everything went back ok.

Dad is the brave one. Its actually my dad that put it in. I personally couldn't do technical stuff

Its all okay now. We've got it started. We were using Jaguar (the original system disc that came with the computer)

But we tried Tiger instead. We installed our system flawlessly.
