A lot of the time when I am looking on google images and I click on a thumbnail to view it fullsize firefox asks me if i what programme i want to open it with etc. I would rather it didn't but can live with it, what annoys me is that the files are automatically saved to my desktop.

Is there anyway I can stop this?

Maybe your download actions list is screwed up. Go to Preferences and then the Content Tab. At the bottom there will be an option to manage how Firefox handles files. See what the action list has in it.

If it's only happening to you sometimes, I think it's because only one type of image file on the list is set to behave that way and you don't come across that type all the time (like and .svg file)
