Unfortunately, the only way to backup with Time Machine over the network is to get the Time Capsule. There's currently no way to use an external hard drive connected to an Airport Extreme for a Time Machine backup.

There was a Time Machine and AirPort update today. Has anyone tried TM and the Extreme? I cannot wait to get home to try it!

Has anyone had luck on this? I'm trying to do the same, external backup via time machine to a hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme

After assigning my lacie a password and enabling file sharing I now have
an external hard drive taking care of Time Machine back-ups over the A.E.
