But sice yesterday when I downloaded the automatic updates from apple my internet speed connection has slowed down drastically! Does anybody know if you can revert the process and uninstall these updates!

What witeshark suggested will only repair file permissions. Since you have updated your software it is a good ideas to repair permissions.

So, what does repairing permissions actually do - even after installing new updates or whatever?

In unix each file or direcotry is file permissions. There are three permission groups as in user, group and other. You the user would have read, write and execute to file or folders/directories that you own. There is also the group permissions if the is open any person in your group could have read, write or execute. Last is other or world. In some case when an application is install the permission of a file or directory/folder maybe changed in order to make it easier to install software.

You can do a man chmod in a terminal window to get a better understand of file permissions, itf you don't have a unix book.
