Macbook pro to wd live hub directly with Ethernet cable

I want to transfer files from my Macbook pro to wd live hub directly with Ethernet cable connection. Is this the fastest way to transfer? Do I need to configure both devices manually?

Ethernet is not the best or fastest way to do any type of large transfers. If possible, use Firewire 800 if available. No configuration is necessary.

There is only an Ethernet port available on the WD TV Live Hub

Then, yes, to connect directly, just configure IP addresses manually, to be in the same subnet, and not in your current router's network. Example Mac IP 192.168.3.3, WD IP 192.168.3.4. Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on both.
(I guess the WD supports Windows sharing/Samba?)

It did indeed work as per your example. I transferred a 1.09 GB file in 1min 18sec
