Ipod format

Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz, 2GB Ram, 160GB HDD
My friend got a new ipod and gave me his old one. (3.gen - 15 GB) But he was always a windows user and I finally turned my back to Windows couple of months back... everything works fine except it wont let me update the software (not that i need it much) because it is windows formatted ipod. It is just an annoyance really but does anybody know how to change it to mac formatted?
