Even thought the 3GS is a generation old, do you think it's better than most of the phones currently on the market?

No, not especially. Certainly no worse though.

XJ?? I would certainly say that the 3gs is ahead of other phones as an overall package, aside from the iphone4, but it's not really the BEST phone at anyone one thing. I doubt people who have it are complaining about it.

Software = Yes
Hardware = No

Although I don't think you can find a better $99/w contract phone on the market today.

Please don't take it the wrong way. I think the 3GS is an excellent phone, and with iOS4 it would appear to be even better than it was originally. I just don't think it's that much better or significantly worse "than most of the phones currently on the market" as the OP asked. Honestly, I put the iPhone and many of the high end Android handsets in the same upper 5% group. I think they all have +/- aspects which kind of even things out overall. :)

Because iPhones have the App Store, and other phones don't (or the ones they do have aren't anywhere near as good), the iPhone is *clearly* superior to other comparable phones for most people (specialised needs excepted).

And that's *before* you add in iTunes and iBooks. So yes, thanks to its vastly superior software, the iPhone is far and away the technologically superior phone.

That doesn't mean its perfect for everyone, but if we're judging by what it can do, there's not another phone on the market that even begins to touch it. Maybe some of the better Android models will catch up in a few years.

OS and the Interface on the screen to me is way better than anything I have ever used. That is what made me want to try and own an iPhone in the first place. So far I have seen nothing to make me change my mind as yet.

Strictly hardware-wise, I might've gotten a better phone for the money, however, the software has such a wide band of support that I couldn't find a better phone for the price.

which is why I was saying, "as an overall package..." If the iphone was just the hardware along with an android os, or any other os besides iOS, I wouldn't care much about it.

It certainly appeals to me more. TBH though I haven't looked all that closely at the other options out there, since I'm very happy with what I have.

As someone pointed out, yes it is ahead of other phones in terms of software, but hardware wise it's becoming pretty dated with these new smartphones coming out with more memory, faster processors, better displays etc.

I think it's up there in the top 5% too, I also think some Blackberries,Android and Nokia devices are in that top 5% also. Obviously this is a Mac/Apple forum so the opinions are going to be somewhat bias to the iPhone.

Glad you added that last part, because after having owned my iPhone for the past year and a half, I have enough experience with it to say you're wrong. You can't just go around stating opinions as being fact like that. It's not "clearly superior"... The App store its self works very well, granted. But the experience on the whole also depends on the apps therein.

You can find the same amount of truly useful apps in the Android market as you can on the over exaggeratedly populated App store. I say over exaggerated because I don't count hundreds of fart apps as anything other than redundant and useless.

Same goes for any other redundant app. Nice to have choices for sure, but let's take IM apps for example. How many are there in the app store ? I personally have Nimbuzz, eBuddy, Skype, Fring, WhatsApp and PingChat! And there are tons more out there. How about just one that works with no limitations, and is stable. Like an official iChat app. Just sayin'.

My point is that you can find exactly the same type of really useful apps in the Android Market as you can in the App Store. As for iTunes ? Yuuuck ? Sorry, I'm not a fan of iTunes in general or the way it works. I like Songbird, and I like hardware that doesn't have to be tied to one platform or one single piece of software like the iPod and iPhone have to. I like being able to take a device and plugging it in and having it be recognized regardless of its platform.

I do realize I'm in the absolute tiny minority here on this forum where that is concerned, but what you're saying is just not accurate for everybody. Perhaps a majority of the people HERE... but not everywhere. I would just never presume to speak for everybody like that. Mine is a differing opinion, that is all, and think you should have taken the same approach with that.

I know people generally think I'm pretty one sided, but to squash that one here's some truth: iPhone hardware is exactly what it is needed to be. No more, or less powerful. Just like with Linux in that you can run a box with really dated hardware, it all boils down to how well the OS has been written, and on top of that, aside from the processor in the iPhone, the hardware compliments the software, so that everything runs as efficiently as any other phone out there.

Sure, a 1ghz Snapdragon processor sounds great on paper, but if the apps, OS or firmware aren't singing along in perfect harmony, then the hardware has to work really hard to keep up appearances. I'm not saying that hardware doesn't make a difference, but it only makes a difference if it's allowed to. Hope that makes sense.

I don't think your one sided Doug, You speak the truth and that is Apple is not God and there far from perfect, And that's OK with me. I will always use a Mac as for my smartphone I rotate between iPhone,Nokia,BB,Android and what ever else is cutting edge. But I will always stick with the Mac ever since my first Macintosh Plus.

That being said the 3GS runs just fine at 600Mhz mainly because it also has a independent graphics chip PowerVR SGX graphics chip,The two paired together make the need for a single snapdragon unnecessary.Even jailbroken the 3GS still performs well and if you sold one today you could easily fetch $300-$400 it's still very relevant and in demand.

Nothing is perfect. There are things that are nicer than other things, but no device designed by humans is perfect! :D

Go to 1911forums.com and check out a Colt -vs- Springfield thread, or a 9mm -vs- .45 thread. Those are just nasty!
