I just picked up a PowerBook G4 17in screen 1Ghz 1gb ram. It has 10.4.11 installed on it. Should I leave it on that or update to 10.5? Will it run slower if I update?

you could get away with running 10.5 but it may run a bit slower.

Are there any features that would make it worth it on an old powerbook?

If you can update to Leopard, go ahead and do it. Leopard includes Time Machine for one thing, plus updated copies of iLife and iPhoto. Beef up the memory to the max.
