Safari:

Cmd is required to be pressed in order to open a link in a new tab in Safari. Is there a way to avoid the need to press cmd and yet always have the links open in a new tab? (I mean, never ever allow Safari to open more than one window)

If you have a 3 button mouse, click the scroll wheel.

Hmm, should work assuming you have "Command-click opens new tab" checked in Safari's prefs.
BTW: 2 buttons and wheel is considered a 3 button mouse. I had my first one for a month before I found out you could click the wheel. What I get for not reading the book. :) (LONG time ago)

configure Safari so that a link will automatically open a new tab

From Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true

Kill Safari (cmd-quit) and relaunch. It should now open new links in new tabs

Thanks for the help

I tried what you said and it worked. Now, I can click the middle button (the one with the scroll wheel) to open links in a new tab. Left click still does not open the link in a new tab. Is this what you intended? Is there a way to have left click open the new tab?
