'About This Mac' Issue

I am having some major issues with a Mac Pro I purchased used.

Firstly, I paid for a 2.66GHz Quad Core, however when i go to 'About This Mac' it says:

2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

Is this right? Should it not display it as being a Quad Core instead? I am confused!

I have done several fresh installs of the OS but same results.

Yes you are confused.

The word "dual" in "dual core" means two. So 2 x 2 = 4

Do the math...2 x 2.66 dual core = 4 cores!

If each CPU was a Quad Core, then it would have 8 Cores total. Nick is correct.

There can be some confusion with the whole "core count" with Mac Pro's.

The original 2006 Mac Pro was "nick-named" a "Quad-Core" Mac Pro...since it has TWO dual core processors. So 2 x 2 = 4.

But some newer Mac Pros actually truly do have a "Quad Core" processor(s)...where each processor has 4 cores on it. So in this setup, if the Mac Pro had two quad core processors...then it would have 2 x 4 = 8 cores.
