Time Capsule - first "backup"

Hi there,

I'm not sure if this is the right area to post in - I hope it is.

I have a small (and feel, a very dumb!) question... I have just bought a Time Capsule for my Macbook Pro 17" (latest model etc).

For the first "backup" I attempted to connect my MBP and the TC together using a Ethernet cable, however I don't think I'm doing it correctly, because my laptop isn't registering the TC.

However, if I'm in a room with wifi, my laptop does. But, backing up my 450GB laptop over the wifi is absolutely hopeless...

Can anyone help me?

I plugged the ethernet cable into my laptop, and the socket on the TC with the shape <-> which I believe is correct?

You may want to try a different cable, or one of the other ports. Should have 4 designated <-> and that is the correct port.

EDIT: If that doesn't work, turn off airport and see if it forces it to switch to Ethernet. After that if you still have problems post back.

Is your TC set to extend an existing network wirelessly? If so on some, and perhaps all, TC models extending a network wirelessly disables the wired Ethernet ports.

When I did my first back up I connected to the AEBS via ethernet and turned the wi-fi off and it worked great backed up to the attached WD hard drive in a couple of hours.

I have a TC and AES running together as a WDS network and have no problem connecting directly. Though, to be honest I don't do it that often and my 58 year old brain doesn't remember as well as it used to. So, I may have to turn airport off to make the connection (been some months since I last did it so not sure about that).
