I just attempted to run Disk 2 of my original Snow Leopard Disk that has the AHT.
I start to test but then get a lock up screen.

Thank you all for your advice.
I am sad but the reality is probably a Logic Board Failure... I could not bring myself to try a new SSD as I may not able to return-So I have cancelled my order that I placed for a SSD.

A very heavy heart... Life has to go on..It is not my health but an equipment was not return to health.

I would like to try changing my logic board for a working one but feel too expensive to try my curiosity..

I could sell mine for parts but have no idea as to how to go about..

Thanking you all again

Regards

Hi After many attempt I managed to install the Disk 1 content of Snow Leopard.
Had the following screens to say
1.Installed Succeeded
2.Additional Information
Then restarted
3. Different languages floting by screen
4 Welcome screen to choose my country
5 Do you already own a Mac to transfer back up (I did not have)
6.Select wireless network
7 Enter your Apple ID
8 Select picture for your account
9.Enter Apple account details

at this point my screen got frozen.. with a window telling me to force quit . As the install got acknowledged I turn on the sound and heard the chime!

Now I am not sure how to restart... I am very scared to just press the start button because I do not know if I would corrupt my installation.
What is the best way to start to see if the installation had taken effect?

Would this happen if there is a problem with Logic Board?/ What could be the cause for this lock ups? Is there any firmware updates I need to install?

I am again very grateful if you could suggest me of any steps I could follow...

Regards

No, it appears the Logic Board is OK. The lock ups of freezes could be due to a defective hard drive. Firmware updates will appear if needed by activating software update.

Just go ahead and restart the machine to see if it will boot normally and not freeze up. Let us know.

It was late night I did not see your post.

Got this morning here in UK and restarted-
It did boot ok but did not hear the "start up Chime" as Apple logo appeared.

Also in the past I use to hear a faint spinning or to something to that effect (a very faint spin sound) and see a small rapidly blinking white light at the front lid joint as when the start button is pressed. This is not as obvious as it use to be by the way.

But once booted I am able to go to safari and sound works-if that make any difference to find what is going on.

I tried on the top left Apple logo and checked for update-There 1.2GB update available, agreed to down load, and on the screen where I have not set a password, selected ok
Down load began and into 278Mb a small window appeared "Apple download is tampered with and could not continue with the download.. will try later or to something to that effect."
(I did not install the disk 2 of my original Snow Leopard installation disks -worried if I will hit a screen lock-up, I am sure I made aware before.)

It is kernel panic message Now I realised because I found this and is what the message is :

This message may appear: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
OS X: About kernel panics

I found this on my Mac Book Air:

I notice my Mac Book Air Date is July 2009!! If you see the above log it suggests July 2009!! I bought this computer on the 2nd Sept 2009 from Apple direct.

I did not try download again because when problem started the lock up came up halfway through my down load (To recap my earlier experience)

Should I still go a head and check for updates and select to download?
or Is there any special update I need to install?
My non-computer knowledge mind wonders, if the downloads are in "small packets" may get installed without hitting a lock up screen?

Thank you again for your thoughts and help.

Regards

I could hear the "chime" at the start of the system

Instead of attempting to update through the top left corner: Apple-> Software Update....
I should go to Apple and download "Mac OS X 10.6.8 update Combo V1.1?

I am ever so grateful for your advice.

regards

On booting I could hear the chime at the beginning prior to the Apple logo appear... then the spinning circle..and screen turn blue and window opens as normal.
I can reach safari.. and google.

Re attempted at installing software update..
got a message appeared ""The digital signature on the update is missing or invalid. The update may have been tampered with since being signed by Apple. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs"

When I looked at the details a exclamation mark at iLife?

So I have tick for not to install iLife, allowed to be installed but the same message again: "The digital signature on the update is missing or invalid. The update may have been tampered with since being signed by Apple. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs"?

Is there any thing I could do?

... I could not bring myself to try a new SSD as I may not able to return-So I have cancelled my order that I placed for a SSD.

If your SSD has failed...you can continue to try whatever you're trying a MILLION times...and it will not change anything!:(

It's like having an automobile tyre (UK spelling);)...with a big hole in it. You can try a million times to inflate it...but you're going to still end up with a flat tyre because of the big hole.

The most obvious answer is the SSD has failed in your computer...and you're just beating a dead horse continuing to troubleshoot further. If you're going to be a DIY home computer repairer...you've got to have known good parts to swap for potentially bad parts (the SSD in this case). YOU NEED A NEW SSD TO TEST WITH!!!:)

FYI...you should be able to boot this computer from an external device:

- external hard drive
- USB thumb drive
- external optical drive (with an OS install DVD)

So set yourself up an external HD, bootable USB stick, or an external optical drive...and try to boot up the computer. If it boots successfully from an external device...then the internal SSD is bad.

Also...booting from an external device can also allow you to examine & possibly repair the internal SSD.

I agree with Nick. Not 100% sure what but something has failed. It very well could be the drive. You are getting file corruption and something is causing it.

Do you have an External hard drive? If so install to that. Do you still have the issues? If not, then it's the internal drive, if you still do, something Memory or Logic Board related.

Time zone and Year was not correct for the failed download but I am stuck again>>

It downloaded the necessary install once I set the Time zone and the Year correct on my computer.

However after full download while it was installing just prior to finish for a restart it has got the kernel panic message with lock up screen...
How should I go about restarting to implement my download..?
I feel if I force quit my computer it is not going to start..

Any helpful suggestion please.

Thank you very much indeed for both-pigoo3 & dtravis7.
I would be very happy if it is SSD. I would like to try the external Hard Drive. Mine is a Mac Book Air.
So do I connect my external drive using the usb on my Mac Book air 2.1 (2009)
can you direct me to link the way to try this technique to identify if my SDD is the problem..

Thank you very much.

STOP pursuing the download approach. If the internal SSD is bad..the download approach won't work...since you're trying to download & install on a bad SSD. If the SSD is bad...you need to boot the computer from another source.

And FYI..."bad" storage devices can be totaly bad or partially bad. "Partially" bad is actually worse...because sometimes things will appear to be fine...and other times not fine...thus making you think that the storage device may be good.

Snow leopard problem

Hi - I had similar problems and eventually traced it to a faulty instal disc which would occasionally crash while trying to re instal. After several tries (and disc cleaning) I was able to make a USB flash drive copy of the instal disc and subsequent two reinstalls have gone like clockwork.
Also I have dealt with OWC in the states and can recommend their service.

Thank you Nick.

I will order a new SDD and give it a try and come back here for help.

You all are very helpful. Sorry nick if I'd upset you by repeating my tasks-I honestly did not want to upset. Sorry If I had.:[:[

I will definitely try a new SSD... (When I got doubt in my mind hearing a possible Logic board failure-I was a bit worried and hence all what I have said) :Blushing:
Thank you once again.

So do I connect my external drive using the usb on my Mac Book air 2.1 (2009)...

That's exactly how it works. Folks everywhere have been using external drive for years & years & years.

You need an external HD with the proper OS installed on it. But to do the OS install...you need an operating computer. So unless you have access to a 2nd working Mac...an external HD with an OS on it won't work...since you won't have any way to install the OS on it.

So the other approach is an external USB optical drive (CD/DVD drive)...and an OS install DVD. Since you have a MacBook Air 2,1...you can use a OS 10.6 install DVD (£14.00):

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (UK)

...can you direct me to link the way to try this technique to identify if my SDD is the problem...

This isn't brain surgery!;) If the computer won't boot from the internal SSD...and it will from an external device (as suggested in earlier posts)...then there is a problem with the internal SSD:

- the internal SSD is dead
- the internal SSD is dying
- the OS install on the internal SSD is bad
- the internal SSD is damaged.

But you cannot determine any of this...unless you can successfully boot the computer from an ALTERNATIVE device (something external).

I am recommending that you get an external USB optical drive...and order the Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple (you need the actual disk...not a download).

No problems here...and not upset in any way.:)

I have seen too many of these threads where someone has a bad internal storage device...and the thread keeps dragging on & dragging on, and dragging on.

Like I mentioned...you can test until "blue in the face"...and if the internal storage device is bad...nothing will improve. And if it's a "partially dead" storage device...it will give you mixed messages. Sometimes good & sometimes bad.

To do your own computer repair/troubleshooting...you need the proper tools:

- external devices to boot a computer from
- bootable OS material (bootable USB OS install sticks, bootable OS install disks, external HD with an OS installed on it, etc.).
- Or known good parts to replace possible or definitely bad parts with.

Good luck,:)

That's great! This will certainly speed up the process.:)

Just plug in the drive, insert the Snow Leopard disk, restart the computer in any fashion that works at the moment...and press the "c" key during the restart (which forces the computer to boot from the external drive).

I done the above: I got a chime followed by Apple logo in a grey screen with a spinning wheel led me to a screen with language of choice.
Chosen English and the Mac OX preparing installation..to next screen to install snow leopard installer with options to repair using disk utility or restore your computer from time machine or perform other tasks from utility
just selected to install took me to Apple's agreement and the following screen shows up my internal disk with the choice to install.

What Should I select? at this stage?

Does it mean my computer is booting from external source-Is that what you mean? I do not see the Snow Leopard OX on the screen..

Well you could try two things:

- You could try the repair using Disk Utility...and see if this helps. After doing this...then you will need to boot the computer from the SSD. This assumes that there is a working OS on the SSD (not sure at this point with all that has been going on). If there is no working OS on the SSD...then do option 2 (below).

- Do the Snow Leopard install.

I choose the Disk Utility -First Aid-repair Disk
Few seconds later message in the box...
Volume appear to be ok
volume repair complete
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required

Then boot the computer from SSD. I got the Chime, Apple Logo and have the snow leopard window opened..
