Burning onto DVD-R?

Hi, does anyone know how to burn AVI files onto a DVD-R?

I want to store my AVI files on the DVD-R (Verbatim) as backup/storage, and if possible, play or transfer the AVI files back onto my laptop later if needed.

Note: I DO NOT want to play the files on a DVD player, I just want to store the files.

Stuff I have:
-Macbook Pro (2.4 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, 256 VDRAM, etc...)
-Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger and Windows XP w/ Bootcamp
-AVI files (around 400GB)
-Verbatim DVD-Rs (4.7gb, 16x, 100 pcs)

Er, which OS and DVD burning software should I use?

Here is a perfect example where the built in help system has the answer. To see that, set the Finder to be the active application. Click on Help, then Mac Help. In the search box type "burn dvd" (without the quotes) and hit the return key. Several possible answers came up but I double clicked the obvious "Burning a CD or DVD".

Below is the text found in the blue hightlighted box, there is more detail for you to see.

Insert a blank disc into the optical drive of your computer.
If you see a dialog, you can choose an action from the pop-up menu and select "Make this action the default" if you want the same thing to happen every time you insert a blank disc.

The disc appears on your desktop.

Double-click the disc to open it, and drag the files and folders you want on it to its window.
The Finder places aliases to the files in the disc's window. The original files are not moved or deleted.

Arrange and rename the files exactly as you want them.
When burning the disc, the Finder gives the items on the disc the same names and locations as the aliases in the disc window. After the disc is burned, you cannot change them.

Choose File > Burn Disc, and follow the instructions.
The files that the aliases point to are burned to the disc. In addition, if any folder you copied contains aliases, the original files for those aliases are burned to the disc as well.

But I just found out my external hard drive isn't compatible w/ the Mac OS T___T.

So I have to burn via Windows XP somehow now >_>;
