it seems like i have deleted my desktop completely. I'm not gonna go into explaining why i did it but the main point is that its been deleted through my trash. Does anyone know how i can recover the desktop without having to reboot the whole system? everything i do on my mac from downloading files and music from the internet to saving documents is done through my desktop and i really didn't notice how much it actually meant to me until i lost it. If someone can give me a hand, it would be appreciated :)

What do you mean exactly? You have nothing on your screen at all> dock, HD icons, etc?
If you dragged it all in the trash and emptied it, then any files on the desktop are gone. The dock and HD are easily returned (in theory). Need some more specifics though please.

So if you were to open your user folder (home folder) and navigate to the folder called "desktop," nothing would be in there? I assume you also EMPTIED the trash, you didn't explicitly say this?

If so, then there's not really a lot of hope. You could of course restore the ~/Desktop folder pretty easily from your Time Machine or other backup, if you have one. If you didn't, start kicking yourself pretty hard now.

Some utilities can try to rescue deleted files, but stuff on the desktop is harder than other files to recover since the desktop is in a constant state of flux (reason #12 not to keep stuff on your desktop except very temporarily). Your best bet is likely to be Data Rescue, I believe the free trial lets you SEE if you're going to get anything back before making you pay for it (it costs about $100).

Good luck.

... Does anyone know how i can recover the desktop without having to reboot the whole system? ..... ;D;D

What's wrong with rebooting the whole system ? .... ( Not that this step wil bring any data back. )

Your best options are to restore the Desktop folder from a backup.
You can try these Data Rescue utilities mentioned above at your own risk and with an unknown level of success.

Cheers ... McBie
