Hi all,
I am a newbie to this forum and to Mac so please bare with me as I find my way. About 2 months ago I switched from Windows to Mac. I bought myself a MacBook pro with the following specs: 2.66GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB DDR3 RAM and running OSX 10.6.7. The machine worked smoothly for 2 weeks and from then onwards I have been encountering Kernel Panics daily. I have tried the following fixes;
1. I changed the memory
2. I uninstalled all the programs that didn't come with the machine such as Parallels.
3. I re-installed the OS off the CD it came with.
4. I formatted the hdd and re-installed the OS to version 10.6.4.
5. I have spoken with Apple Support who asked me to re-install the OS.

I have had 3 kernel panics for today. The most recent one is posted below. Can anyone please help? I work on a Windows network and the panics are beginning to affect my job. I don't want to give up on Mac just yet. Again, any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. (The panics occur both at work and at home.)

The kernel panic is occurring here:

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WindowServer

This is a tough one to track down because it could be related to bad hardware or software. But since you removed all non Apple provided applications and reinstalled OS X according to Apple's instructions, I'm inclined to think it may be bad hardware.

I suggest first running the Apple Hardware Test: LINK (Run the extended tests.)

It may show us something and then again, it may show that everything's OK. It will point out if memory is bad. You say you swapped out the memory so I doubt that's it.

If the tests come up with nothing definitive, make an appointment with your local genius bar at the Apple store and take it on in for them to run diagnostics on.

Thank you for your quick reply. I forgot to mention that I did the Apple Hardware Test that came on the disk with this machine. The test reported that the hardware was good. Unfortunately, I am based on an island in the Caribbean and the closest Apple store to me may be in the US. :( So, going to an Apple Store is almost impossible for now. That's my dilema. I have attached another panic which occurred earlier today. Thanks again.

...I have tried the following fixes;

I'd say that about 80% to 90% of the time kernel panics are due to a hardware problem. In order of likelihood, that problem is usually:

- bad third party RAM
- a bad USB hub
- a peripheral that your Mac doesn't like for some reason (sometimes just a poorly attached cable, or a bad cable, is the problem)

If you have very recently added new software, especially something that alters the system at a low level, such as anti-virus software, or something that changes the look and/or function of the Mac interface, I would suspect that first. Uninstall that software and see if things get better. (This type of software typically requires an uninstaller to completely disable. Just dragging the application, or the application's folder, to the Trash won't disable it.)

If you have not added this type of software just prior to the problem starting, then I would say that trying to track down this problem with software fixes is most likely a waste of time.

If you suspect a hardware problem, the next thing to do is to shut down your Mac, uninstall all peripherals other than the Apple-supplied keyboard and mouse (that is, uninstall all third-party peripherals, even mice and keyboards), restart and see if that helps. If it does, you can re-attach one peripheral at a time, restarting each time, until you isolate the offending peripheral.

If that isn't a solution, I would remove all third-party RAM and see if that fixes things.

The latest panic is pointing to a kernel task, which when looking back appears to be here:

Processor context corrupt
Error enabled
Uncorrected error
IA32_MC3_STATUS(0x40d): 0x0000000000000000 invalid
IA32_MC4_STATUS(0x411): 0x0000000000000000 invalid
IA32_MC5_STATUS(0x415): 0x0000000000000000 invalid
IA32_MC6_STATUS(0x419): 0x0000000000000000 invalid
IA32_MC7_STATUS(0x41d): 0x0000000000000000 invalid

Again, it looks like a hardware error. The very next thing to occur is a memory dump.

Since you're on an island away from the mainland US, I would give Apple a call and arrange to have it shipped to them for analysis, repair and or replacement of the machine.

I'm assuming you put back the original memory modules?

You might also want to try the suggestions Randy gave above.

I would normally agree with the 3rd-party RAM being the culprit, but since in the OP it was mentioned that the RAM was changed after the problems started, I'm not so sure. Try a different RAM-testing utility for starters. Rember should do a better job of it. If the new RAM fails, then most certainly put the old back in. If those fail as well, then either you bummed out with bad RAM, old and new, or perhaps the motherboard itself is wonky. Either way, Apple will owe you a replacement.

Hi all. Thanks for the help thus far.
Singer, I am going through your suggested articles. The Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews article recommends tons of fixes. The sad thing is that kernel panics can occur for so many different reasons. I really hope that I am not making it worse.
Chscag, I plan to ship it back to the US on May 10th if all fails.

I had about 8 crashes yesterday. I have them saved if you guys what like to see some of it. I have now cloned my hdd to an external and booted the machine off it. I intend to keep working this way the the next 3 days to see what happens.
In as much as this crashes have driven me up the wall and have placed a bitter taste in my mouth for Mac, on the brighter side, I have learnt so much about Mac since the crashes I might be a pro at the end of this.
Thank again.

Lifeisabeach, I ran the Rember test and it passed. So we can rule out bad memory.

Keep us posted on this. If your MBP behaves itself booting from the external hard drive, that almost certainly points to a flakey internal hard drive. That would be an easy fix that you can do yourself without having to ship it back to Apple.

Let us know and good luck with it.

I don't want to focus on the negative...but if these kernel panics are hardware related (and it's not bad ram/incompatible ram...which is usually a BIG cause of kernel panics)...then the problem could be something MUCH more serious. Like something wrong with the logic/motherboard (which you really don't want)!!!

So definitely be 100% sure it's not the ram before crossing ram off the list of things to investigate. Does your MacBook Pro have both ram slots filled? If so:

- shut down the computer
- remove 1 stick of ram
- restart & see if the computer is stable

If not stable:

- shut the computer down
- remove the 1 ram stick that was in the computer
- install the other stick of ram
- reboot & see of you have stability

This test may help you figure out if you have 1 good & 1 bad stick of ram.

Good luck,

- Nick

Singer, I am going through your suggested articles. The Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews article recommends tons of fixes. The sad thing is that kernel panics can occur for so many different reasons.

They can be caused by all sorts of things, but in the vast majority of cases, they are caused by the few things that I mentioned in my post. I highly recommend that you do your best to rule those out first.

I ran the Rember test and it passed. So we can rule out bad memory.

Unfortunately, while it is a good sign that your RAM passed using Rember, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is good. An engineer who wrote RAM testing applications for a ilving once told me that to do a thorough RAM test, a program would take weeks. No one is willing to wait that long, so no software RAM tester is completely thorough. So, the fastest and easiest way to test RAM is to swap out the RAM that is questionable with known good RAM.

Since that is impractical in many cases, what I usually recommend is removing all third-party RAM (which is usually the problematic RAM) and only leave in the OEM RAM that Apple provided, and see if things get better.

This, but also test that same stick in both RAM slots. You could also have a bad RAM slot, and the stick can be perfectly fine.

And for you guys targeting 3rd party RAM, Apple's RAM can also be bad. Brand new Mac Mini Server where I work kept having issues, finally did a clean install and hardware test and original RAM stick was bad.

Both are excellent points. Regardless of what the culprit is or may be, the bottom line here though is that there is almost certainly a hardware problem. It may be more expeditious for the OP to just call Apple and see what they can do (hopefully an outright replacement).

Both RAM slots are filled. When I first encountered the kernel panics I tried running on each single stick of RAM at a time. However, I still experienced the crashes. After which, I got 2 new stick of RAm and still got the panics.
I should say too that it has been a 'wait and see' plan because when I first formatted the hdd, it worked fine for a week or 2 after which the panics occurred again. Thursday (May 5th), I got about 8 panics (even during cloning my drive with CCC). Friday (May 6th) I booted off the cloned external drive and worked the whole day on it putting the Mac through tons of rigors and I didn't have any panics. I plan to keep working off the external drive, waiting to see if i get more panics. If it does then I will go at the memory again like you recommended.

If its a case of my MBP being 'wonky' how easy/difficult will it be for Apple to replace it?

It's beginning to look more and more like your hard drive is flakey and may be the cause of the KPs. Keep that in mind. And as I replied before, if that's the case, you can do the repair yourself.

Who or what is the OP? Thanks.

OP = Original Poster. That's you. :)

Two important points here:

- it's real EASY for Apple to fix/replace the whole computer if you still have Applecare in it. Since it sounds like this MacBook Pro is only about 2 months old...there shouldn't be an Applecare problems.
- Easy for you may be a different story. Since you're located in the Caribbean somewhere...there may be a bit more involved getting your computer shipped to Apple, Apple examining/evaluating it, and getting then computer back to you.

I guess there are advantages & disadvantages to living somewhere in the Caribbean!;)
