My father in law is thinking of getting a Macbook Pro and the only upgrade I see that might be worth it is going to the 200gig 7200rpm hard drive.

Do you guys think it is worth it?

Doing it myself would only save about $20-$30 and void the warranty= Not gonna happen.

P.S. I am already ordering him 4 gigs of RAM from zipzoomfly.com

Thanks

200g is always worth it.

Changing the drive out yourself will not void the warranty, and if you do it yourself and get an enclosure you will be able to get him an external drive for the new MBP

actually changing the HDD on a MBP your self will void the warranty. The MBP has to be taken completly apart to access the drive.
On a MB its right there in the battery bay and doesnt void the warranty if you diy.

The external case is a good idea. I personaly plan to buy a 250gig or 320gig Westerndigital Passport external drive. Then just have the drive removed from the external case, placed into my MBP ( @ an Apple Service Center) and have my 160 placed into that external case.

I hate having to pay people to do something that I am qualified to do but understand how it may impact the warranty...

What have you been told the cost is to do this by Apple Service personell?

Thanks..

i was in two minds about this upgrade in the end i bought the standard model and i have been really pleased with the speed of the 5400 rpm 160gb hard disk. I would only get this upgrade if you really must have 200gb or you are using the laptop for video editing or something were speed is important.

I use photoshop etc on mine though and its fine even opening large images, 40mb upwards.

Thanks Ricky55. He ended up getting the 7200rpm drive just out of sheer need for speed. 2.4 GHz C2D, 7200rpm hd, and 4 gigs of RAM in a laptop....geez!
