Mods I can't post a link the normal way, so could you please fix for me as I'm on my iPad Mini iOS 7 Edit : Seems like iOS 7 Auto inputs it all for me Bonus FYI
You can't tell me what to do. :p

I think this is another clear sign that MS is going to privilege 365 and/or migrate to it as the permanent method of selling Office.

I hope not but I suspect you're right. They did release Office 2013 for Windows so that does raise some hope they'll do the same for the Mac next year.

I hope that you're right - I'd much rather have a local copy than one that is contingent on an Internet connection. Who knows how that will play out.

Office 365 doesn't only work that way - my company looked at migrating. If you buy a top level membership then you get an off-line install as well as the web apps.

That's a great option for businesses and other entities that can afford a top level membership but it doesn't help an individual user. Mac Office is too big a cash cow for MS to not consider an update for individual users and of course students. However, MS has done dumb things before so who knows?

The pricing structure for Outlook for Mac leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

After buying Office for Mac last year (Home and Student) I wanted to purchase Outlook.

Two choices: $219.99 for Mac for Business, ignoring that I had paid for an underlying copy of the suite or $9.99 per month for Office 365.

Buy Office for Mac | Office For Mac

I will not rent Word, Excel or Outlook. Never. Ever. Too many great alternatives.

And how much is that top-level subscription? I'm going to guess that it's considerably more expensive than the individual prices.

Side note - I just noticed that the "university subscription" for 365 is $79 for four years (includes two mobile and two desktop installs). I have to say - that's not bad.

The cost comparison for a business was reasonable - it would cost around the same over 3 years for Office365 vs having your own servers and the software licenses. I haven't seen Office365 costs for non-business users so I don't know how that compares.

But the fact remains that you don't have to be Internet dependent with 365.

Fair enough - it would appear that you don't need an active network connection. However, the use of those apps is tied to a subscription that ultimately requires some sort of persistent connection (in the general sense) which is what I'm not comfortable with (and the main reason I shun "always-on" connections for products).

I agree that it wouldn't be my preferred model for software. It depends on your usage pattern though; if you only occasionally need to make documents, and usually at home, then why not 'hire' MS Word for $10 each time rather than buy it for $150 or what ever the going rate is? And each hire would get you the software for a month, so even a spike of activity like applying for a new job might well be covered by a single charge. Even if you do end up spending more than the software license cost after a number of uses each individual transaction would have been so small as to be inconsequential compared to the one-off license cost.

It seems to be the way the industry is going, though, and I think Adobe has already moved to this model? It allows them to have a more smooth income month-on-month rather than having peaks and troughs built around release dates.
