I bought a new (aftermarket) battery and installed it in my MacBook Pro 17".
It looks and feels the same as the original one.

The computer does not recognize the battery, showing an 'x'.

The battery seems to be charged about 80% according to the LEDs on the back but the computer will not start up on battery only.

I can start the computer with the charger plugged in and when I remove the charger, the computer continues to operate under battery power. However the battery status icon never changes from the 'x'.

Please advise a solution.

Return the battery and buy a new one from Apple!:)

When I disconnect the charger, the computer runs fine on battery power.
The battery is obviously working OK.

This is a communication problem between the battery and the computer.

How can I make the software recognize this battery?
