MBP dvi to VGA Toshiba REGZA TV

Hi, I have 2008 MBP snow leopard and when I connect to my Toshiba REGZA 42 in lcd using DVI to VGA I get a problem... when using mirror display mode it shows the bottom doc and desktop fine but any safari browser windows are massive and I cant see all the window properly?

I thought this was a resolution problem it defaults to 800x600 but why then can I see the desktop ok just not the browser windows?

It is a resolution problem. You need to change it to match the resolution of the Toshiba.

Your apps (a lot of them) remember what size you had them set when you last opened them.
So, if for example you have Safari set to open basically at full screen on a MBP at 1440x900, it is going to open at 1440x900 even though your desktop on the TV is only 800x600.

Some windows will resize automatically to fit within the screen of the new smaller resolution. You'll find that many will not.

There should be a section in your Toshiba owners manual listing the resolutions acceptable via it's VGA input.

Ok That would make sense, do you know how I change the resolution on safari to display properly?

You do not set the resolution from within an application.
The most you can do with an app is resize the window, which is going to be pretty tricky, sometimes impossible, if the corner of the window is off the screen and you can't get to it.

Resolution setting would be done from System Preferences - Displays.

Sorry I misunderstood what you were saying... There is nothing I can do about it displaying in the wrong resolution? would it make any difference if I closed safari and open with the TV connected?

the TV manual says this about Supported Computer Resolutions 1024 x 768 (XGA), 640 x 480 (VGA), 800 x 600 (SVGA), 1280 x 768 (WXGA), 1280 x 1024 (SXGA), 1360 x 768...

If I am using a DVi to VGA cable am I limited to the 800x600 or are you saying I should be able to change the resolution on the display under preferences on the macbook?

It will open two windows, one for your internal display and one for your external display.

ok one last thing does the resolution settings on both displays have to match? i.e. I need to change the system prefs on the macbook to be the same as the external display.
