iPod classic won't turn off

I have googled this, but the answers from there have not worked. I have tried holding down the top and middle buttons - I believe this is meant to reset the iPod..? I get to see a little grey apple, but then the screen just reverts to whatever the last menu was. Someone suggested toggling the 'hold' button, but still no success. ATM it is just on a table, turned on, running down the charge - someone said that would do the trick. Any suggestions, please..??

LOL ya that will do it but for a more sudden approach just hold the play / pause button.
