Hi Friends!! I am a mac User, my version is 10.5.8 (powerpc g4), and I would like to update to 10.7, which I've heard is the latest version. How can i do it? I clicked on "Apple Software Update" but it didn't find any update. May I download the update? Should I format my computer? Is there any way to update my system without format?

You can't. 10.7 has not yet been released and 10.6 (the latest version) is only compatible with Intel based Macs. To get the latest version(s) of OSX, you'll need to buy a newer Intel based Mac.

Those are not updates. 10.6 is a OS version. You have to purchase it. Snow Leopard.

10.7 is not even released yet so there is no LEGAL way to even purchase it.

I only need to update to mac os x 10.5.8, on my Intel Based Computer. I need that update for run FileMaker Pro 11 advanced. On my PowerPC computer I updated to 10.5.8, so I can run Filemaker 11 on it.
But on the Intel one I have the 10.4.11 version installed. So i need to update from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8, or whatever version which allows to run FileMakder.

thank you very much!!

Read carefully...there are no updates it is an entirely different oerating system which you have to pay for. Try auction sites and make sure you only purchase the black full retail install version.

Yes, because you were already running 10.5 Leopard. Those are "Point" updates for for a given OS like 10.5. 10.6 is a new OS and not downloadable.

There was 10.5.0, 10.5.1, 10.5.2 up to 10.5.8. Those are updates and thus you were able to download and update.

In Windows XP, can you go to update and update for free to Vista? Windows 7? Same with OSX 10.4, 10.5 10.6. Like XP, Vista, 7.

You will have to purchase OSX 10.5 to get it to 10.5.8 or 10.6. Search E-Bay and Amazon for 10.5 (Leopard). Apple sells 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for $29 but you MUST have 10.5 installed to upgrade, you can't go 10.4 to 10.6.

To the OP:

In case it hasn't already been said:

- The newest OS you can update your PowerPC (cpu based) Macintosh to is OS 10.5.8 (Leopard).
- The latest OS available for Macintosh computers with an Intel cpu is OS 10.6.7.

If you do not have OS install disks for OS 10.5 "Leopard" for the PowerPC Macintosh, or OS 10.6 "Snow Leopard" for your Intel cpu based Macintosh...then you NEED to buy them!

And in case you didn't know...or if it isn't clear. OS 10.6 CANNOT be installed on PowerPC Macintosh computers...only Intel based Mac's.

HTH,

- Nick

uuuuoooo!!! now it is very clear for me!!! thank you very much to all!! Well, in my company we bought another computer, with OS X 10.5.6, and I have the "MAC OS X Install DVD" with this version of OS X. Could I install this DVD in the MAC which has 10.4.11, to update to 10.5.6? In case I can, Could I do it without format the computer?

thank you very much!!

Aside from the fact that you'd be applying one license to more than one computer, it won't work anyway. The OS disc that ships with a Mac is for that model only. It won't work in a different model.

Simply no. Original install discs will work only with the model they were released with.
