Hello everyone

I have decided upgrade my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro (MD101) RAM

Default is 2*2GB = 4GB RAM

I would like just install one 8GB Crucial RAM 1600MHz module in one slot

8GB Crucial RAM + 2GB default Apple RAM = 10 GB

I know matched pair of module is better but by this plan if I need In future can buy another 8GB and upgrade to 16GB

my question is :

May this configuration with different module will damage my MBP or impact performance?

Whether this (8GB+2GB=10GB RAM) with different brand will better than (2*4GB=8GB RAM) with same brand and matched pair of modules?

Thanks in advance for your answers

No it won't damage your computer.

Is 8GB memory with dual channel mode faster than 10GB RAM with Single Channel or Flex ?!

This is why matching pairs is better.:)

I seem to remember (in the past)...that matched pairs of ram did have a "user-noticable" improvement in performance. With newer Mac models being so fast...the difference between matched pairs & non-matched pairs may not be as "user-noticable" to the average user doing common everyday computing tasks. But this difference may still be measureable on a computer benchmark test.

To someone who is doing really large graphics or video projects (that may take hours & hours to render)...this difference may be more noticable/measurable in real time...and thus much more important.

It's very difficult to predict the future.;) All I/we can say is...if you've had some trouble with just 4 gig...8gig will be better.:)

What I would do:

If you can only afford 8GB at the present time - get the 8GB stick. If it won't work with the 2GB sitting in there already, just pull it and run off the single 8 GB stick. The single 8 will be better than the 2 x 2 GB you have now. Then start setting aside the money for the 2nd stick.

I'd definitely get it from Crucial or OWC so you can make sure you can get the same brand/type at a later time.
