You can use Garageband now to create iPhone ringtones.

Like Del said, Garageband is the best way to get free ringtones onto an iPhone. All you have to do is be running firmware 1.1.2 or higher.

Why didn't you just return it and get a new one? Also, does your iphone have to be unlocked or something to make your own ringtones in garageband?

No, it's a feature that came with the 1.1.2 update. Just create a clip in Garageband and then hit the Export as ringtone option, which will make it available in iTunes for you to sync to the iPhone.

Find the disks that came with your system, put them in and in the window that opens and install the bundled software package.
