Malware corrupting disc permissions?

Or is my hard drive heading south? I find the Mac slowing to a crawl in a week or so with a lot of heat coming from the upper left corner indicating a runaway application or search I suppose. I run "repair disc permissions" and speed is restored... for a while. Always the same disc permission errors come up. Suggestions? Time for an OSX update?

Those permissions are normal.
I would upgrade the ram and your OS.
What you failed to mention was hard drive size and how much free space you have.

Probably a good idea to boot your machine with the Leopard install disk that came with it, run Disk Utility from the disk and check the hard drive. (Verify and repair)

Also, is there some reason why you have not updated your version of OS X? You can run Mountain Lion on that machine but I would highly recommend you at least update to Snow Leopard first. Snow Leopard can be purchased direct from Apple for $19.99.

Thanks, I will try that.

Yes, I was running an older version of ProTools that was not supported under OSX 10.6. I think it is now time to update the OSX, update memory, and update ProTools.

I have not measured it, just an observation. When I run an HD video I expect the upper left corner to heat up because it is fairly memory and processor intensive. If I am simply surfing the net with no active video and notice the heating, I expect a runaway search or application is taxing resources.
