External Hard-drive - Which format

Mac Pro: 2.66ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 4gb Ram, ATi X1900 XT 512MB, 1TB HDD, 19" LCD
So im about to make my switch and im going to backup all my files to my external hard drive but what format does the hard drive need to be for the mac to read? I think its fat32 but i just need to be sure

fat32 is the disk format you want.

Yup, FAT32 for sure, that way you can read as well as write to the drive.

You only need FAT if you are going to be using it on a Windows machine. Otherwise it's better to use "HFS Journaled" AKA "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in "Disk Utility". Which will be faster, and secure.
