Hello,

My friend needed me to do a clean install for her on her used macbook pro (unibody). The computer boots fine but when I would restart the computer and try to boot from the Snow Leopard disk, it would get a "Kernel Panic". It would just spin the disk for a couple minutes then display a message saying that it needs me to reset by holding the power button.

The CD reads perfect if we let it boot through the OS but then when it restarts and trys to boot the CD it would still show the panic screen.

I wasn't able to get the automatic panic log until I loaded into safe mode.

Can someone please help me.

Thank you so much!

Welcome to Mac-Forums

Are there any peripherals or external monitors plugged into the MBP? If so unplug them all. Also what kind of SL disks are you trying to use? Are they the ones that came with her MBP originally?

Cheers

Thank you.

There are no peripherals or external monitors. Just the MBP by itself. I'm using the SL disk from the store. I don't believe she has the disks that the MBP came with originally.

OK sounds like the disk should be fine. Next thing to do would be to try ans reset the PRAM and NVRAM to see if that clears the problem. To do this turn the MBP on and immediately after hearing the startup chime you need to hold down the "cmd+alt+p+r" keys, keep them held down until you hear the startup chime again. When you hear the startup chime for the second time release the keys and press and hold the "alt" key, this will bring up a menu showing bootable media, it should instantly give the option for booting into the hard drive but give it a few seconds and it should show the SL disk aswell, navigate to it using the arrow keys and press enter on it to boot from it.

Hope this helps

- Simon

dodgy optical drive maybe, or peripheral, as Simon says. (lol) maybe even graphics related, trying to decipher this code.

Simon, I've done that a couple times before and it didn't work. I just tried it twice and still didn't work. =(

Any aftermarket Ram installed? In other words RAM that did not come stock in the machine.

What sort of SL disc are you using? Not one from another computer as these are extremely model specific. Otherwise as Simon says faulty optical drive.

I'm going to guess you've hit the nail on the head there, Harry.

If you're trying to use a gray system disc, note that these are tailored to the model they were sold with. In order to upgrade your friend to Snow Leopard (assuming it didn't sell with that version), he/she will need to buy the $29 disc.

If it did originally come with Snow Leopard (released around August of 2009), then I would contact Apple and see about getting replacement system discs. We've had members report that Apple has sold them for as little as $20.

An OSX 10.6 DVD from another Mac will often get Kernel Panics like that. You need a factory Retail OSX DVD from Apple or Best Buy. Let us know which OSX DVD you are trying to boot from.

I just checked your 2nd post and you did say SL DVD from a store, but just being sure as that for sure would cause your issue.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

It is the $29.00 upgrade disc from the Apple Store (Microcenter to be exact). In which I plan to use to use the Disk Utility to do a clean install of Snow Leopard.

Don't know if this applies to you/her. A Mac that came out AFTER the retail DVD came out, can't use the retail DVD. Won't have the correct driver/.kexts for the newer Mac hardware. In which case, you need the specific model Install DVD.

(can't say this is true always - I don't have that many Macs to try!!!)
