Screen Fuzzy After Resolution Decreased

Here's the deal: My 17" screen has too high of a resolution (1920x1200) and this makes fonts and everything too small. When I try to lower the resolution, (1680x1050) the quality of everything is lessened. The quality in Vista is even worse when I select a lower resolution. Is there some way to make it not do this? Also, I don't have the option of making the resolution 1680x1050 in Vista. Is there a solution for this also?

I tried posting screen captures, but the computer automatically adjusts the picture's quality distortion depending on the resolution.

Running an LCD display at anything but the native resolution will make it look that way.

As you've been told, anything but the native resolution will result in a poor display. Instead of lowering the resolution, why not purchase a large external monitor if your budget can afford it?

I've got a 23" display which I'm planning on setting up soon once I get a desk in here. But then I still have the problem of using the computer away from home. I guess I can make do.

why not just increase the font and icon sizes ?:S

that is possible in os x?

Correct, LCD's look terrible when it's displaying anything other then its native resolution. As someone mention why not just resize the fonts and icons?
