Delete in Mail

OS 10.6.8, Mail 4.5

I don't use Mail as a rule, but in trying to help a friend who has 'lost' some mails he considers important, I went to Trash to retrieve them. Not a thing.

Thinking my friend had deleted them from Trash, I did a couple of sample mails, sent and received them and then deleted them. When I looked in Trash, there was no sign, all gorn.

Questions:
1. Does Mail 4.5 now delete altogether on the FIRST Delete command (keystroke or clicking the sign)?
2. Is it this Preference (att - my own setup) in Mail that will change that behaviour back to the older system of 2-phase deleting?

If they are using Time Machine they can be retrieved by clicking on the mailbox and then
enter TM.

Hugh, that option is still there even in Lion. Mine stay in the trash unless I right click and go Empty Trash. EVERY email client that is worth anything does that.

Not sure what is up. If he is moving them to trash, they should be there if that option is checked.

We have this sorted out now. B is a complete Mac, and anything else computer-ish, novice. He had 1275 emails at the server. We deleted them via webmail.

However, he'd also imported them to this MBPro via Apple Mail. It took an eternity to delete them by the two-stage method you mention.
